Figure Skating Grand Prix final backs to Beijing

The 2010 Grand Prix of Figure Skating final will be held in Beijing for the second time from December 9 to 12 at Beijing Capital Gymnasium, announced a top official of the China winter sports in Beijing on Tuesday.

"This is the second Grand Prix final that China host since 2004, " said Zhao Yinggang, director of China's Winter Sports Administrative Center, "We are ready to host the tournament and hope the figure skating fans in Beijing would enjoy the gala at the Beijing Capital Gymnasium."

Tourists arrivals in Philippines up by 17% despite travel warnings

The Philippine tourism industry remains buoyant despite the travel warnings issues by other countries.

Data from the Bureau of Immigration showed that tourist arrivals in the Philippines jumped by 17 percent to 2.56 million as of Nov. 8 over the same period last year.

"Despite the travel advisories, I can tell you the numbers are up," Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim said Friday.

Last month, the United States, Britain, Australia, France, Canada, and New Zealand warned their citizens against traveling in the Philippines because of possible terror attacks in Manila, its capital city.

Yu Hongyin has finally finished the 2,600-kilometer journey from Shenzhen to Beijing in 80 days, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. He finished his walk Nov. 16.

Tourists and film fans are flocking to the grave of Harry Potter – but not the teenage wizard created by J. K. Rowling, the Daily Telegraph reports. Potter was a British soldier killed in 1939, and his grave is drawing tourists to the backwater Israeli town of Ramle. "There is no connection with the Harry Potter we know from literature, but the name sells, the name is marketable," said a tour guide who has taken dozens of tour groups to see the grave.

New cold front to hit N. China

A new cold front will hit north China and bring down temperatures over the next three days, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said Tuesday.

As the previous cold front moved south, temperatures in some parts of northeast China had risen by more than 10 degrees Celsius, according to NMC's online statement.

North and northeast China regions would see higher temperatures on Tuesday, with highest temperature in Beijing and Tianjin to exceed 10 degrees Celsius in the daytime.

Rebuilding of China's Wolong Nature Reserve, a major giant panda breeding base ravaged by the massive earthquake in May 2008, is expected to start before the year-end, an official said.

China achieves pollutant control targets in advance

China has achieved in advance its pollution reduction targets for two major air and water indices, Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, said in Beijing Wednesday.

The index for sulfur dioxide, an air pollutant, had dropped 13.14 percent by 2009 compared to 2005 levels thanks to the closing of small thermal power plants and steel plants, Zhou said at meeting in Beijing.

The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) index, a measure of water pollution, had decreased 9.66 percent by 2009 from 2005 levels, and, in the first half of this year, it dropped another 2.39 percent, he said.

Shanghai to build world expo museum

Shanghai has begun preparations to build a world expo museum, the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Executive Committee said Friday.

The announcement came days after the Shanghai World Expo closed on Oct. 31, attracting more than 73 million domestic and overseas visitors during a six-month period.

More than 200 expo participants have confirmed in written statements that they would donate about 4,000 exhibits to the museum.

1st stage completed of China's largest wind power project

China has completed building the first-stage of Jiuquan wind power base, the country's largest wind power project, in northwest China, local officials said at the ceremony to mark the completion Wednesday.

More than 3,500 turbines have been erected with an installed capacity of 5.16 GW, and at present the turbines are generating 1.15 GW of power, said Wang Jianxin, director of Jiuquan Development and Reform Commission.

Jiuquan wind power base is located in the desert area near Jiuquan City, northwest China's Gansu Province, which has abundant wind resources.
