6.1 magnitude earthquake hits southern Iran

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake on the Richter scale hit southern Iran on Monday, and there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The quake struck at 11:22 GMT in Kazeroon in Iran's southern Fars province, according to the Iranian Seismological Center's website.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter, with a depth of 35.30 km, was initially determined to be at 29.6704 degrees north latitude and 51.6557 degrees east longitude.

'Risk map' designed to skirt disaster

Chinese authorities are drawing up a national natural-disaster "risk map" in an effort to avoid potential catastrophes in the building of urban construction projects in western China.

"We've started many natural disaster risk evaluation projects since August," said Zou Ming, director of the disaster relief department of the Civil Affairs Ministry.

Zhou said the "risk map" would help city planners build cities and towns that avoid danger-prone locations, such as areas prone to earthquakes, floods and mudslides.

Typhoon brings worst rains in a century to S China

Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year, has brought the heaviest rains in a century to the southern Guangdong Province, triggering landslides in some cities.

Fanapi, which landed in coastal Fujian Province, southeast China Monday, wreaked havoc in Fujian and Guangdong before it weakened into a low pressure system at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The typhoon packed torrential rain in most parts of Guangdong Province in the 24 hours from 9 a.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday. The average precipitation topped 100 millimeters, the worst in 100 years, the provincial weather bureau said in a statement.

Warning level for Typhoon Fanapi upgraded

China's meteorological authority raised the level of alert for Typhoon Fanapi to the second highest on Sunday as it nears the country's south coast.

Fanapi, the 11th typhoon to hit China this year, will move westward at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, and make landfall between Monday morning and noon at the coast between Guangdong and Fujian provinces, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said.

The shipping route linking Xiamen in Fujian Province, and Jinmen, in Taiwan, was closed Sunday with Fanapi approaching, said local authorities.

Polluting listed companies to report environment accidents

Listed Chinese companies in heavily polluting industries are to be required to inform investors of environmenal accidents, the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced Tuesday.

A draft guideline for listed companies to release environment-related information was announced Tuesday on the ministry's website to solicit public opinions.
