Sarah Palin plays TV tour guide in her home state

Sarah Palin plays TV tour guide in her home state

Sarah Palin.

Whatever you may think of Sarah Palin, the fact remains Alaska is magnificent with her as its presenter.

"Sarah Palin's Alaska," premiering on TLC on Nov. 14, adds "TV host" to Palin's crowded resume, which already includes former governor, former GOP vice presidential candidate, best-selling author and conservative superstar.

Palin also is a wife, a mother of five and a grandmother, of course, and her new series integrates her home life with Alaska's great outdoors.

Judging from the first of eight episodes, "Sarah Palin's Alaska" keeps politics out of the picture. Sure, the show is effective in selling the Palin brand. But along the way, Palin throws herself into selling the grandeur of Alaska.

The much-anticipated documentary series, shot last summer, is based at Palin's lakeside home in Wasilla. There, cupcakes are baked and kids do their chores (or hear about it from Palin). Then Palin sets off, with family members in

Air pollution control by trees

Trees and other vegetation must use what is in their environment. So it is not surprising to find that they absorb pollutants (natural or man made) which may be absorbed successfully or may cause the vegetation to die.

Vegetation plays an unexpectedly large role in cleansing the atmosphere, a new study finds. The research, led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo., uses observations, gene expression studies, and computer modeling to show that deciduous plants absorb about a third more of a common class of air-polluting chemicals than previously thought.

The ways that trees can help to clean the air should not be overlooked. Trees are an important, cost-effective solution to reducing pollution and improving air quality.

Trees help to lower air temperatures and the urban heat island affect. This reduction of temperature not only lowers energy use, it also improves air quality, as the formation of ozone is dependent

New Zealand could face $1.5b fallout if loses Hobbit

New Zealand's economy could lose as much as $1.5 billion if Warner Bros. relocates its production of "The Hobbit" with the country's burgeoning film suffering long-term damage, economists said on Friday.

New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson shot his blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" trilogy in his home country, which bolstered the local film industry, and he planned to shoot a two-part adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" locally as well.

But the project's future in New Zealand is now in doubt after actors' unions boycotted working on "The Hobbit" and Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros started looking for alternative locations

China allocates 8 bln yuan to fight flooding of smaller rivers

The Chinese government will earmark 8 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) to reinforce small and medium-sized river banks against flooding, government officials said Thursday.

"The central government has shifted its stress of investment to small and medium-sized river control, and all the 8 billion yuan will be in place by the end of October," Zhang Shaochun, Vice Minister of Finance, said at a national conference on river regulation in Hefei, Anhui Province.

In contrast with large rivers, medium-sized and small rivers had been revealed as the weak link in the country's river control work after a series of flood-triggered disasters in

2 panda cubs born in China's breeding center

A giant panda gave birth to twins early Tuesday in a panda breeding research base in southwest China's Sichuan Province, breaking the record number of annual new born panda cubs in the center.

The female twins were born by the mother named You You and the three of them were all healthy, said an expert of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan.

The elder cub, weighing 115.6 grams, was born at 2:07 a.m. while the other, weighing 130.8 grams, was born at 2:37 a.m. The recent

Man United, Chelsea held in Premier League

Manchester United dropped Wayne Rooney to the bench before blowing a two-goal lead and drawing 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion, while leader Chelsea was held to a scoreless draw at Aston Villa in the Premier League yesterday.

United didn't appear to be missing Rooney when Javier Hernandez and Nani scored in the first half.

But after the break, Chris Brunt's free kick went in off Patrice Evra before Somen Tchoyi tapped in from six yards after Edwin van der Saar dropped a cross from Brunt. Rooney played the last 20 minutes as United drew a third straight match.

"It's just explicable - it turned from a fantastic first-half performance to one where we have given the game away," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We should have

China pushes ahead toward deeper emissions cuts

With a growing multitude of smokestacks dismantled and polluting factories closed, China is scaling up its often painful efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and boost energy efficiency.

The Chinese government is currently deliberating the 12th Five-Year Plan for China's development from 2011-2015, a critical period for the country to meet its target set last year to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per GDP unit by 40-45 percent by 2020 from the level of 2005.

"It's not easy to achieve it," Barbara Finamore, a senior member of the U.S.-based environmental group National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), said earlier this month in the Chinese city of Tianjin on the sidelines of the latest round of UN climate change talks.

China has successfully slowed down its CO2 emissions growth in the past five years, but without continued efforts to improve energy efficiency and diversify its energy structure, it would only be able to reduce carbon intensity by 37 percent by 2020 from the 2005 level, added Finamore, director of the NRDC's China program.

Protect arable land, says UN

China should redouble its efforts to protect enough arable land to produce grain for its growing population and meet the expanding demands of its middle class, a senior UN official has said.

Kanayo F. Nwanze, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, said Chinese leaders have been faced with a two-fold challenge in feeding the country's population, even though Beijing has attached great importance to high-tech input into agriculture for years.

"For China, limited access to agricultural land but a growing population has always been a challenge," Nwanze told China Daily as China's leaders convened in Beijing to determine

Wind power booming in China

Wind power is developing rapidly in China and is set to become a major factor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This was the message from the China Wind Power 2010 exhibition in Beijing Wednesday.

At the end of 2009, China ranked second in the world in terms of installed wind generating capacity and was the country where capacity was growing fastest, according to a report released Tuesday by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Greenpeace.

Opening the exhibition, Klaus Rave, chairman of GWEC, said that by the end of 2011, China will have surpassed the United States to become the

Large areas of Earth drying up: study

Mainly due to climate change, large swaths of Earth have been drying up, posing a threat to the ecosystem, a new study available Los Angeles on Tuesday finds.

The drying areas are mainly in the Southern Hemisphere, including large parts of Australia, Africa and South America, according to the study conducted by researchers at Oregon State University.

In large portions of the world, soils are now becoming drier than they used to be, releasing less water and offsetting some moisture increases elsewhere, said the study published in the Oct. issue of the journal Nature.

The study is the first major

With one month before the opening of the 2010 Asian Games, China has activated 100 police checkpoints on the roads and waterways to the southern host city Guangzhou Sunday to form a "security firewall."

A total of 132 checkpoints, scattered in south China's Guangdong Province and five neighboring regions, are responsible for examining people, vehicles and articles in order to ensure the smooth running of the 16th Asian Games and the Asian Para Games, according to an initiative jointly issued by the Ministry of Public Security and the security coordination commission for the Games.

UNEP set to inspire action on reducing emissions

The UN Environment Program said it will be releasing 30 case studies in the run-up to the UN climate convention in Mexico to prove that solutions to combat climate change are available, accessible and replicable. In a statement received here on Wednesday, the UN agency said current commitments and pledges under the Copenhagen Accord covering emissions up to 2020 provide a good platform for global action, but the level of current ambition is widely viewed as insufficient to meet the 2 degree warming limit.

"Across the globe, community-based programs and entrepreneurial endeavor are challenging the status-quo through innovation and creativity," said Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director. "Importantly, they are delivering multiple benefits from access to energy, public health improvements and reduced environmental

Although governments have disagreements on emission reduction and transparency, they still can identify the direction on issues in line with guidance from the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol and the Bali Road Map, China's top climate negotiator Xie Zhenhua said Monday in Tianjin, China.

"Progress has been made at each negotiation conference over the past 20 years," said Xie, at a press conference Monday during the new round UN climate talks held in Tianjin, "China just hopes to contribute positively to this long-term negotiation as the host."

He said negotiations are close to reaching a consensus in the coming Cancun climate
