Happy Valley gets a little happier

A carnival featuring over 130 performances from 100 performers worldwide, including Extreme Sports, trampoline shows, a "diving comedy show", car modeling and folk dances from Brazil and Africa, is ongoing daily until August 29.

The demise of Beijing Amusement Park in mid-June left the capital with "just" two amuse-ment parks: the Disney-clone Beijing Shijingshan in the far west and Happy Valley on the East Fourth Ring Road.

But for any thrill-seekers feeling the pinch, the already-huge (560,000 square meters) Happy Valley, currently comprising 40 rides over six themed areas, is set to enlarge still further this month, according to

China to release 7 mln rare fish into Qinghai lake

Northwest China's Qinghai Province plans to release seven million of a rare fish species into China's largest lake before the end of the year, to boost fish stocks, local authorities said Wednesday.

Qinghai will release six million naked carp, only living in Qinghai Lake and its basin, into Qinghai Lake, a saltwater lake, the provincial agriculture and husbandry bureau said in a press release.

Authorities released one million naked carp into the lake in the first half of the year.

The slow-growing fish is critical to the "water-fish-bird" ecosystem in Qinghai Lake. It is under second-class state protection.

A riverside dream

A few friends riding bicycles and stopping to spend a long, sunny afternoon on a rocky beach along the Lhasa River is a sweet episode in life.

The Lhasa River remains a main subject of interest for me ever since I first saw it on our way from Gongga Airport to Lhasa city. The ragged, rocky mountains on each side cannot stop it from running through them and giving way into a wide, slowly declining valley.

And it is in this valley that trees grow, farmland is irrigated, yaks and sheep are raised, villages are set up, small, sweet indigenous
